For forestry-based operations, wood is the main raw material, representing more than 50% of the total production cost. However, existing measurement systems, such as payment by green weight, manual measurement, and weight-to-volume conversions, have many limitations.

These include:

• High level of HUMAN INTERVENTION, leading to subjectivity and risk

• LACK OF CONTROL: Traditional systems do not generate an audit trail, leading to high risk of fraud and theft as well as supplier/buyer conflicts

• MANUAL MEASUREMENT: Slow and labor-intensive

• GREEN WEIGHT MEASUREMENT: Moisture content is highly variable - not a good measure of fiber content
